There are two ways to do it though -- currency enchange rates and purchasing power parity.

The CIA-factbook comparisons are helpful. For all the talk of the century of China, the US is many times richer. It makes sense that poor nations acquiring productivity boosting technology would experience sustained double digit growth.

That isn't to say that other third world countries are the exception -- certainly there have been enough mistakes across the globe to make China the odd man out.
