Constitutional Crisis

I think Iraq's new public officials (Chalabi, et al) finalized a constitution today, and that its intent is to allow some autonomy for the Kurdish, Sunni, and Shia regions to govern as they see fit.

I speculate that the Shia area (the biggest) will make a mockery of Democracy, Whiskey, Sexy in the coming years, and that the treatment of women under the law there will be catastrophic. I think that this issue alone is enough to judge the violent overthrow of Saddam's regime a mistake, as I believe the medieval treatment of women in the Muslim countries is by far the most plausible explanation for the economic and social problems in those countries, and that our actions have made that problem more severe, not less.

Just sayin'.

I wonder if Mr. Penn believes, like me, that Iran won the war weirdly known as Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The issue isn't just about women, but broadly that the government is the source of the ills in the M.E..

It is completely up to the people in a democracy to decide social policy. If you disagree about their liquor laws, well, who cares?

If it's something like women being disallowed to vote or drive, well, I'd be surprised. They we're allowed to vote for the transitional government, and that will almost guarentee they will get other rights.

As Mr. Pundit likes to say "it's a process, not an event". That is 100% correct.
